Info about River Orkla
ORKLA is habitat for wild Atlantic salmon over a stretch of 88 km (55 miles), from the sea in Orkanger and up to Stoin, which is just below Ulsberg in Rennebu municipality. The salmon-holding part is located in two different municipalities; Rennebu and Orkland.

Trondheim Airport Værnes – Orkanger: 78 km
Berkåk Railway Station (Rennebu) – Orkanger: 70 km
Oslo – Orkanger: 460 km
The biggest recorded salmon from Orkla was 25 kg (55 pounds). The biggest salmon in Orkla are normally caught the first two weeks of the season, when the average weight is around 8-10 kg (20 pounds). Salmon between 3 and 7 kgs enter the river from the middle of June and towards middle of July. Grilse start running from the middle of July. From early-mid July, Orkla holds salmon over its entire length.
Orkla is regulated for hydro power production
The river has five powerplants that was constructed 1978-1985. This has caused that some sections of the river are closed for fishing. Anglers and others that stay near the river should note that the water level sometimes can rise fast, because of releases of water from upstream reservoirs.
National fishing license fee
Everyone that fish for anadromous salmonids in Norway must pay the national fishing licence fee to the government. People below 18 years of age are free to fish without paying the fee. Everyone MUST show the receipt for having paid the national fishing fee before you can buy a license or hire a beat in Orkla. You can pay the fee on internet here:
It is recommended to pay the licence fee on the internet before you travel to Orkla, print out a copy and keep a safe copy of the receipt on your mobile phone.
Rules to remember
- Always bring with you the national fishing license fee, your local fishing license (for the beat) and the certificate for disinfection of your gear.
- Make sure you know the public fishing regulations and local fishing rules, especially quotas and eventually how they change during the season.
- Cooperate with river rangers and surveillance personnel.
- Make sure you report catches according to regulations.
- Avoid spreading fish diseases. Disinfect your gear. Report to authorities if you observe or suspect diseases.
- It is strictly illegal to use fish as live bait!
- Be considerate to others that is fishing or recreate along the river. Take care of nature, do not litter or cut trees or branches on smaller trees.
- Do not walk on farmland.
